Your 6-Step Guide to Creating a Vision Board

Last Updated: April 14, 2025 | Reading Time: 9 minute(s)

If you believe that you are what you eat, then you understand the power of Vision Boards. But still, let me explain. We are not only what we put into our bodies, but also what we expose our bodies to. Our physical environment directly affects our health and behavior. That is why you should choose your food, your social circle and even your entertainment, wisely.

Building a vision board or a vision notebook can help rewire your brain which can, in turn, improve your life. In my case, I can say that by mindfully creating my vision board, I externalize my inner thoughts and expose them, to better understand myself, my goals, and my self-imposed limitations. With a vision board, I’m able to scrutinize my subconscious and slowly change it to the vibrational frequency I desire. Throughout the years, not everything I have posted has come true, but most of it has, such as: improving my health, traveling the world, finding true love, completing my master’s degree, getting great job opportunities and, of course, taking my sabbatical.

But be warned, to see results from your vision board, you must learn how to properly build one and how it actually works. So, I invite you to prepare a hot mug of vegan golden milk, set aside some quiet time and start building your own vision board. This article gives you clear instructions on how to build your vision board and work its magic on you. Gather your tools and start right now!

First, What is a Vision Board

A vision board is a collage of images, words, and affirmations that represent your desired future, your ideal life. It serves as a visual representation of your goals and dreams in the present time, enabling you to align your thoughts, emotions, and intentions with your aspirations.

The concept of vision boards is rooted in the principles of the law of attraction and the power of visualization. The law of attraction suggests that you attract what you focus on. Visualization, on the other hand, harnesses the brain’s remarkable ability to create new neural pathways and reprogram its beliefs and behaviors. By consistently exposing your subconscious mind to positive images and affirmations, you align your thoughts and emotions towards the realization of your goals. Remember that your external environment affects your conscious and subconscious thoughts. And your thoughts affect your reality!

How to Create Your Vision Board

Step 1: Reflect and Set Your Intentions

This is the most important step. Before diving into creating your vision board, take some time for self-reflection.

  • Get cozy and make sure you are alone and undisturbed while you reflect.
  • Set clear intentions by asking yourself what you truly desire in various areas of your life, such as health, money, career, relationships, and lifestyle.
  • Write down your goals and aspirations to gain clarity and focus.

Many recommend meditation as the go-to introspection method, but I disagree. If you have never meditated in your life, you might find it extremely challenging to sit still and start thinking about big things like your life purpose, your true self or God.

In this new media age, our minds have become so accustomed to overstimulation, that our brains will relentlessly reject any request to be still. But this mindfulness challenge is like a free-weight that trains the mind muscle.

Once we have achieved pure stillness, we have achieved everything. But it takes a while to get there.

  • So, my advice to you is to start by practicing a form of active meditation, such as journaling.
  • Get a journal and allot some free undisturbed time to write down who you think you are and who you want to be while covering the areas I mentioned above. There are more life areas to work on, but you can start with the ones I mention in this blog.
  • Also, understanding how the law of attraction works is critical to help you set a strong foundation for your vision board.

Step 2: Gather Inspiration

Once you have an idea of what you want to start attracting into your life, gather inspiration from different sources. By the way, you can and should start working on your VB right away. Don’t wait until you think you have the perfect plan or the perfect concept of yourself. The process itself helps you achieve a clearer idea of who you are and who you want to become.

  • You can browse through magazines, books, websites, or create a Pinterest inspiration board.
  • My favorite method is going straight to Google Images and typing in the kind of images I envision. For example, I’ll go to Google Images and type in: ‘fit woman enjoying herself swimming’ and browse through the different pictures until I find something I resonate with.
  • You want to be specific with your searches. In my case, since I’m trying to incorporate swimming into my fitness routine, I try to find pictures that remind me of how I want to look and feel. Since I want to be fit, and enjoy swimming, that is the type of image I search for.
  • Look for images, quotes, and words that resonate with your intentions and evoke positive emotions within you, even if right now that ‘ideal you’ feels impossible.

The point is to look at your vision board and feel inspired. If your board does not make you feel inspired or happy, it’s not going to work. This is why you have to take as much time as necessary to find specific images that will remind you of Your ideal life. And you can work on this for as long as you want. There is no time limit. For instance, if you are trying to manifest a new car, search for an image of a person that looks like you, driving that car you want. Search for images that would be like pictures of your future self!

Step 3: Choose Your Materials

A vision board can be physical or virtual. I recommend physical boards that you can hang in your bedroom and see every morning when you get up and at night before going to sleep.

  • Once you have your virtual collage (your draft), proceed to sizing them and printing them in a way you can fit multiple images on a large board, then gather all your materials. Your printed images should also be clear and full color.
  • Common materials include a large poster board or corkboard, scissors, glue sticks, magazines, markers, colored pens, sticky notes, and thumb tacks.
  • It’s important to make sure your images are big enough so that you can clearly see them as you pass by.
  • You can also complement your board with phrases or mantras that inspire you, such as “I am so happy now that I know my life’s purpose”. You also have to be specific with your words. Don’t just write: “I am rich”, instead add something like: “I am so extremely happy now that I am financially independent and free”.

“If your vision board does not make you feel inspired or happy, it’s not going to work.”

Step 4: Organize and Arrange

Now comes the easiest part.

  • Find a quiet and comfortable space to work on your vision board.
  • Lay out all your materials and carefully arrange the images and quotes you have gathered.
  • Let your intuition guide you in selecting what resonates most with your desires and goals.
  • Consider dividing your vision board into sections to represent different aspects of your life. I, personally, don’t do that, but you might find it helpful.
  • Make your board neat and be creative, but also make sure it’s clear and concise –like those essays you wrote in college. If you add too much fluff, your brain might get distracted and will focus more on the distracting details than on your images.

Remember, the point is to slowly reprogram your subconscious mind.

Step 5: Display and Connect

  • Place your vision board in a highly visible location, such as your bedroom, home office, or study area. Mine is in my home office.
  • Make sure it’s somewhere you will see it daily. Take a few moments each day to connect with your vision board, visualize yourself living your dreams, and embrace the emotions associated with your aspirations. Even if in reality you’re poor as dirt, just allow your imagination to soar.
  • Make it a habit to admire your vision board at least twice a day, preferably, as you wake up and as you go to bed. But you should also look at your board a few times a day, if possible.

I also believe that vision boards should be as private as possible. Don’t offer too much explanation to anyone who asks you about it or criticizes your board. Your family or roommates might not be on the same wavelength as you and might try to discourage you with their own fears and negativity.

Step 6: Regular Review and Adjustments

  • Re-evaluate your vision board and assess your progress at least every three months. As your goals and desires evolve, adjust your vision board, removing what no longer resonates and adding new images and affirmations that align with your evolving vision, your evolving self.
  • Remember you don’t have to be fixated on a goal just for the sake of it. Your vision board should be evolving as much as you do. Plus, as you change your subconscious mind and elevate your vibration, you will notice that your priorities will shift. Suddenly, you won’t care as much about prestige and luxury. The more you journey into yourself, the more wisdom you will gain until you finally realize what’s really important in life.

Let’s stay connected!
