According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 10-20% of people in the United States experience the winter blues over the colder winter months, while about 5% of people meet the diagnostic criteria for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is worth noting that SAD tends to affect more women than men, although the reasons for this are not fully understood. One way of cultivating happiness and warmth during the darker winter months is by adopting a hygge lifestyle or simply taking a hyggelig winter break. In this article, I explain exactly how to do that.

What is Hygge?

In Denmark, the concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is deeply ingrained in everyday life. It is more than just a word; it represents a state of being – one that embraces coziness, simplicity, and an appreciation for life’s small pleasures. Hygge is about creating an atmosphere that evokes warmth, contentment, and a sense of togetherness. Lighting candles, enjoying warm beverages, being mindful, and spending quality time with loved ones are a few examples of activities that embody the essence of hygge.

According to the Little Book of Hygge (by Meik Wiking), these are some of the main elements of Hygge:

  • Coziness: Embrace soft blankets, warm lighting, and comfortable furniture to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
  • Mindfulness: Be present in the moment and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
  • Inclusivity: Treat everyone as equals and create an environment of inclusivity and warmth.
  • Gratitude: Practice gratitude by recognizing and appreciating the small joys and blessings in everyday life.
  • Togetherness: Foster meaningful connections with loved ones through quality time, shared experiences, and deep conversations.
  • Comfort: Indulge in comforting activities like reading a book, taking a hot bath, or snuggling up with a loved one.
  • Simplicity: Simplify your environment and focus on the essentials, decluttering both physically and mentally.
  • Harmony: Create a harmonious environment by incorporating elements of nature, such as plants and natural materials.
  • Pleasure: Indulge in simple pleasures like hot drinks, homemade treats, or enjoying the fireplace on a cold winter day.
  • Well-being: Prioritize self-care and taking care of your mental and physical well-being.

How Embracing Hygge can Immediately Improve Your Mood

Winter can bring with it a sense of gloom and melancholy, but hygge has the power to combat those winter blues.

Research has shown that practicing Hygge has tangible benefits for our mental and emotional well-being. Studies have indicated that creating a cozy environment and engaging in activities that promote relaxation can significantly reduce stress levels and improve mood. Additionally, embracing Hygge has transformed lives, allowing individuals to find solace and joy within the simplest of moments.

  • Reduces Stress: In a fast-paced world filled with constant demands, Hygge offers a much-needed respite. By creating cozy environments and promoting relaxation, it helps to reduce stress and promote overall well-being.
  • Increases Comfort and Contentment: In a fast-paced world filled with constant demands, Hygge offers a much-needed respite. By creating cozy environments and promoting relaxation, it helps to reduce stress and promote overall well-being.
  • Creates a Sense of Community: Hygge is not just about personal comfort; it also emphasizes the importance of togetherness and building meaningful connections. By fostering moments of togetherness with loved ones, Hygge helps create a sense of community and belonging.

Easy Guide to Embracing the Hygge Lifestyle

Creating a hygge-inspired atmosphere at home is a delightful way to fully immerse ourselves in the cozy charm of this lifestyle. Place soft blankets and plush cushions near your sofa, nooks and corners, filling your space with warmth and comfort.

I. Adjust Your Lighting:

  • Opt for soft, ambient lighting with candles, fairy lights, or dimmed lamps to create a soothing and intimate environment. Surround yourself with the comforting scents of freshly brewed tea, cinnamon, or a crackling fireplace.
  • The lighting and light we are exposed to can have a significant impact on our mood. Natural light, for instance, has the potential to enhance mood, creativity, and cognitive performance, while insufficient lighting has been found to contribute to depression and vitamin D deficiencies.
  • One way to create coziness with light at home is to use warm lighting. Warm lighting, characterized by soft, yellow or orange hues, is associated with feelings of comfort, relaxation, and intimacy. This can be achieved by using lamps with warm-colored bulbs, installing dimmer switches, or using candles to create a soft and cozy ambiance.
  • At work, it’s important to consider lighting that promotes productivity and well-being. Natural light is ideal, as it can enhance mood and energy levels. If natural light is limited, using bright white light that closely mimics natural daylight can be beneficial. Avoiding harsh, fluorescent lighting and incorporating task lighting that reduces glare and eye strain can also positively impact productivity and comfort.

II. Dress for Comfort:

  • The way we dress can have a significant impact on our psyche and mood. It is common knowledge that dressing well for an occasion boosts our confidence, self-esteem, and influences how we perceive ourselves. The clothes we wear also affect our physiology and may impact the way we interact with others. Dressing for comfort during winters can be particularly crucial, as extreme cold weather conditions might cause discomfort, irritability, and even depression.
  • One way to dress for comfort at home and work is to choose clothing that is cozy, soft, and warm. Opt for fabrics that are breathable and can retain warmth, such as wool or fleece. Additionally, choosing clothing that fits well and is comfortable to wear can positively influence our physical and mental comfort levels.
  • Layering clothes can also help regulate our body temperature and provide comfort during winter. The layering approach involves using multiple thin layers of clothing, starting with a breathable, moisture-wicking base layer, followed by an insulating mid-layer, and topped off with a waterproof or windproof outer layer for protection from the elements.
  • Swap uncomfortable clothes for soft and cozy garments that make you feel like you’re being hugged. Opt for cozy socks, oversized sweaters, and comfortable loungewear that can contribute to an overall sense of well-being.

III. Stay Warm with a Cozy Drink:

  • Drinking warm cozy beverages can evoke coziness and a sense of well-being due to several reasons. First, the warmth of the drink can provide a physical feeling of comfort, especially during colder months or when seeking solace from stress or anxiety. The act of cradling a warm mug or cup in your hands can be soothing and reminiscent of being nurtured or cared for.
  • Moreover, warm cozy beverages often have pleasant aromas and flavors that can evoke positive emotions and memories, further enhancing the sense of well-being. Certain drinks like chamomile herbal teas or hot chocolate with cinnamon may contain ingredients that have calming or mood-boosting properties. Other cozy drinks like Golden Milk can evoke coziness with the added benefits of aiding with, reducing inflammation and boosting the immune system during the flu season.

IV. Engage in Hyggelig Activities:

Bake Coziness
  • Imagine indulging in a slice of warm and soft banana bread sweetened with natural honey, or perhaps relishing in the gooey richness of vegan chocolate chip cookies made with buckwheat flour and coconut oil. How about relaxing with every sip of a steaming cup of mulled cider, hot chocolate, or herbal tea?
  • Preparing nourishing meals and indulging in the aroma of freshly baked goods is hygge at its finest. The process of cooking and baking can be meditative and enjoyable, while the delicious results contribute to a warm and inviting ambiance.
  • Baking is also an excellent activity for individuals of all ages. It can make for a fun family activity, a cozy date night, or a comforting solo retreat on a cold winter day.

Make Your Own Hygge Candle

  • Engaging in tactile activities like knitting, sewing, or crafting can be incredibly satisfying and calming. These creative pursuits allow you to focus on the present moment, while also producing something tangible and meaningful.
  • Transform your space into a serene sanctuary by creating your own soy-wax candle and bask in the soothing and relaxing aroma that emanates from it. Making your own candle is not just a creative and fulfilling project but also a therapeutic experience that can contribute to your overall well-being.
  • There are several essential oils and fragrance oils that are known for their relaxing and cozy aromas, perfect for creating a serene atmosphere with your homemade candles. Here are some popular options:

Read a Relaxing Book

Build a Blanket Fort and Cozy Nooks

  • Creating a cozy nook or building a blanket fort provides a sense of safety and retreat. Surrounding yourself with soft blankets, cushions, and fairy lights invites you to relax and find comfort in your own little sanctuary.

Find Hyggelig Places this Winter

  • Have a Date in a Hyggelig Place: A hyggelig place embodies the essence of hygge. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in a warm and welcoming environment. Hyggelig places are characterized by their cozy décor, soft lighting, crackling fireplaces, and a sense of togetherness. From snug cabins nestled in snow-covered forests to charming towns with flickering streetlights, these places evoke a feeling of comfort, peace, and relaxation.

Seek Local Experiences

  • Immerse yourself in the winter spirit by attending local festivals, exploring historic sites, and getting to know the local people. Engage in activities that are unique to the region you live or you’re visiting to truly embrace the hygge lifestyle. Don’t be afraid of the cold!
